The Documents You Need to Prove Identity and Nationality

You will normally need to provide evidence of your British nationality and identity. For most people born in the UK before 1 January 1983, a full UK birth certificate is the starting point. If you were born after that date, or abroad, nationality is not automatic and you may need additional documents such as a parent's birth certificate, a naturalisation or registration certificate, or evidence of your parents' status at the time of your birth. Sending the wrong document, or a short-form birth certificate when a full one is needed, is one of the most common reasons a first application is delayed. The Countersignatory Rule

A first adult passport requires a countersignatory: a person who confirms your identity and signs the back of one of your photos. They must have known you for at least two years, hold a valid British or Irish passport, and work in (or be retired from) a recognised profession or be a person of good standing in the community. They cannot be a close relative, someone living at your address, or your partner. People routinely pick a friend who does not actually qualify, and the application bounces back. Some first-time adult applicants are asked to attend a short identity interview at a passport office. This is a standard anti-fraud check, not a sign anything is wrong. Renewing a UK Passport

What Happens to Your Old Passport

A point that confuses many people: for most straightforward adult renewals where your appearance has not changed significantly, you do not post your old passport anywhere. Unused Validity That Carries Over

Up to nine months of unused validity on your current passport carries over onto your new ten-year one. Child Passport Applications

Parental Consent and Responsibility

A person with parental responsibility must make the application and give consent. HMPO may contact both parents. Where parents are separated, or where one parent cannot be contacted, the application can become more complicated and may need supporting evidence such as a court order. These are the child cases where careful preparation matters most, and where getting the paperwork right up front avoids weeks of back-and-forth.

Five-Year Validity and the Sixteenth Birthday

Child passports last five years, not ten, so they come round more often than parents expect. On a child's sixteenth birthday the fee moves up to the adult rate, and their next passport is a ten-year adult one. Worth diarising if a family trip is on the horizon.

UK Passport Fees and Processing Times

Fees are set by HMPO and are reviewed periodically. They rose by around 8% from 8 April 2026, and online applications remain cheaper than postal ones because they cost HMPO less to handle. Because the exact figures change and are not always widely reported, always confirm the current UK passport fee on GOV.UK before you pay. As a guide, at the time of writing an adult renewal is in the region of £102 online and £115.50 by post, and a child passport around £66.50 online, but treat those as indicative and check the live figure.

Realistic Processing Times

HMPO's official advice is to allow up to ten weeks and not to book travel until your new passport is in your hands. That is a deliberately safe planning figure, not the typical wait. In practice, outside peak season, straightforward standard renewals often complete in around three to four weeks, first adult applications in roughly four to six, and applications from overseas in six to ten because of international courier times. July and August are the slowest months; if you are travelling then, apply far earlier than you think you need to. Urgent and Fast Track Options

If you are up against a travel date, two urgent routes exist, both by appointment at a passport office. The Fast Track passport service delivers within about a week. The Premium same-day service lets adults collect their passport the same day, but it is restricted to adult renewals only - it cannot be used for first adult passports, child applications, or lost or stolen replacements. Slots for both book up quickly, especially in the school holidays. Passport Photo Requirements

More applications are delayed by photos than by almost anything else, so it is worth getting this exactly right. UK passport photo requirements are strict: a plain, light-coloured background with no shadows, a neutral expression with your mouth closed, eyes open and clearly visible, nothing covering your face, and no glasses unless you have a medical reason. The photo must be recent, usually taken within the last month, and it must be in colour and correctly sized and lit. Digital photos submitted online are checked automatically and rejected for issues you might not spot yourself, such as a faint shadow behind the head or slightly off framing. Having your photo reviewed against the current standard before you submit removes one of the biggest single causes of rejection.

Lost, Stolen or Damaged Passports

If your passport is lost or stolen, report it as soon as you can. Reporting it cancels the document, which is important for protecting your identity even before you replace it. You then apply for a replacement, and note that the urgent same-day Premium service is not available for lost or stolen passport replacements, so if you have lost your passport close to a travel date, you have less flexibility and should act immediately. A badly damaged passport - water damage, a cracked chip, torn pages - usually needs replacing too, as it may be refused at borders even if it has not expired.

Passport Validity Rules for EU and International Travel

This is the rule that catches people out most often, and it has nothing to do with whether your passport has "expired". For travel to the EU and Schengen area, your passport generally must have been issued less than ten years before the day you enter, and have at least three months left on the day you intend to leave. Because of how those two rules combine, many travellers effectively need around six months of validity remaining, and it is why renewing before you are down to your last few months matters. Different countries outside the EU have their own rules, often requiring six months' validity on entry. Always check the destination's requirements on GOV.UK's foreign travel advice before you book, and if in doubt, renew early.
