CSCS Card UK - How to Get Yours, What It Costs, and Why It Matters

If you work in construction in the UK, the CSCS card is your entry point. Without it, the vast majority of sites won't let you through the gate. It's not a legal requirement in the strictest technical sense, but in practice it's as close to mandatory as it gets - most contractors, principal contractors, and site managers treat a valid CSCS card as a non-negotiable condition of site access.

DVLA Services helps construction workers across the UK apply for CSCS cards online, get the right card for their role, and avoid the delays that come from submitting applications incorrectly.

What the CSCS Card Actually Is

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) is the UK construction industry's primary system for proving that workers have the qualifications, training, and health and safety knowledge required for their specific role. The scheme has been running since 1995 and has now issued more than six million cards. It's colour-coded by role and qualification level, which makes it easy for site managers to check at a glance whether someone is appropriately certified for what they're doing on site.

There's also the My CSCS app, launched in 2025, which functions as a digital skills passport - letting approved applicants access a digital version of their card immediately and add training records over time. Once your application is approved, your digital card is available straight away. The physical card arrives within five working days.

CSCS Card Types - Which One Do You Need

Choosing the wrong card is one of the most common mistakes, and it means your application will be rejected or you'll be refused site entry. Here's a straightforward breakdown:

Green Labourer Card

The most common starting point. This is for general labourers who hold a Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment and have passed the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test. From February 2025, first-time Labourer cards are valid for two years rather than five. Workers who renew and provide evidence of active employment in a labouring role can then get a five-year card.

Blue Skilled Worker Card

This card is for tradespeople who hold an NVQ or SVQ at Level 2 in their specific trade - bricklaying, plumbing, electrical installation, carpentry, and similar skilled occupations. The CITB HS&E test is also required.

Gold and Black Cards

Gold cards apply to workers with NVQ Level 3 qualifications or advanced trade experience. Black CSCS cards are for site managers holding Level 4 or Level 5 qualifications. Both still require the appropriate CITB test.

Other Card Categories

There are additional categories covering trainees, apprentices, professionally qualified persons, and construction-related occupation holders (White card). The My CSCS app now uses AI-driven logic to help applicants identify the correct card based on their role and qualifications - which saves time and reduces wrong-card applications.

Cost of a CSCS Card - What You'll Actually Pay

The price for a CSCS card is £36 for all standard card types (the Apprentice card is free). This fee is non-refundable, so getting the application right before you submit matters. On top of that, the CITB HS&E test costs £22.50 and must be passed within two years before your application date.

For a first-time Green Labourer Card applicant who also needs the Level 1 Health and Safety qualification, the total upfront cost typically runs to around £58.50 plus the qualification course fee, which is usually around £99 depending on the provider. Higher-level cards requiring NVQ qualifications involve additional training investment - NVQs at Level 2 typically range from £1,000 to £2,500 depending on trade and provider.

Renewal of most cards costs the same £36 application fee, plus a new HS&E test if your previous one has expired.

How to Apply for a CSCS Card Online

The quickest route to get a CSCS card is through the My CSCS app or the CSCS Online portal. You'll need your CITB test score report (dated within two years), your qualification certificate or proof of registration, and a passport-style photo. Applications are processed and approved before the physical card is posted.

DVLA Services helps clients prepare applications correctly - matching the right card type to the right qualification evidence and avoiding the rejected-application scenarios that cost workers both time and the non-refundable fee.
