UK Practical Driving Test - Cost, What to Expect, and How to Book Faster

The practical driving test is the last obstacle between a learner and a full UK licence. It's also the point where most people feel the most pressure - both because passing matters so much and because waiting lists at DVSA test centres have stretched considerably in recent years. DVLA Services helps learners book their practical driving test online, find earlier slots, and understand exactly what they're walking into on test day.

UK Practical Driving Test Cost - What You'll Actually Pay

The price for a practical driving test in the UK is set by the DVSA and has held steady since 2014. The standard weekday rate is £62. Tests booked for evenings (after 4:30 pm), weekends, or bank holidays cost £75. That's the full price - no extra booking fee when you go through the official DVSA route.

One thing a lot of people don't factor in up front: if you plan to use your instructor's car on the day, you'll pay for at least one lesson's worth of their time on top of the test fee itself. Most instructors charge £60-£90 to accompany a candidate for the test. Fail and rebook, and those costs stack up again.

There's also the question of speed. With test centre waiting lists running months out in busy areas, many learners pay more in ongoing lessons just to stay sharp while they wait. Securing an earlier date saves real money.

What Happens During the Practical Driving Test

The test takes around 40 minutes from start to finish. It's structured into several distinct sections, and knowing what's coming makes a genuine difference to how you perform.

Eyesight Check and Show Me / Tell Me Questions

Before you pull out of the test centre, the examiner runs an eyesight check - you'll need to read a number plate from 20 metres. Fail this and the test ends immediately. Then comes one "tell me" question before driving begins (explaining a vehicle safety check verbally), and a "show me" question while driving - demonstrating something practical like adjusting the rear demister or using the horn. Getting either wrong counts as a single minor fault, not an automatic fail.

General Road Driving

The bulk of the test covers standard road conditions - junctions, roundabouts, dual carriageways, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and varied road types. The examiner records faults on a tablet as you go. You're allowed up to 15 minor (driving) faults and still pass. One serious or dangerous fault means an instant fail.

Independent Driving Section

From November 2025, this section can now run for the full duration of the test rather than a fixed 20 minutes. Most candidates follow a sat-nav set by the examiner; around one in five are asked to follow road signs instead. A wrong turn doesn't count as a fault - only unsafe driving does.

Reversing Manoeuvre

You'll do one manoeuvre during the test. It'll be either a bay park (driving in and reversing out, or the reverse), or pulling up on the right and reversing two car lengths before rejoining traffic. The old "reverse around a corner" and "turn in the road" exercises were removed from the standard test in previous years.

Emergency Stop

From November 2025, the emergency stop is required in roughly one in seven tests rather than one in three - reflecting how standard ABS technology now handles rapid braking in modern vehicles. If you're asked to do one, the examiner raises their hand and calls "stop." Brake sharply and safely. Stalling is not an automatic fail as long as you maintain control.

What You Get When You Pass

Pass the test and the examiner hands over your practical driving test pass certificate on the day. This document is what you need to exchange your provisional licence for a full UK driving licence - either online through the DVLA or by post. The pass certificate is valid for two years, so there's no reason to delay that step.
