The A1 motorcycle licence is the first full motorcycle driving licence available to UK riders. It removes the L-plate restrictions that come with a CBT certificate, lets you carry a pillion passenger, and opens up motorway access - three things a standard provisional CBT certificate will never give you. If you're 17 or over and riding a 125cc bike, getting your A1 licence is the natural next step and the one that makes motorcycle travel genuinely practical for day-to-day use.
DVLA Services helps UK riders get their motorcycle licence applications and documentation processed correctly, cutting out the confusion that bogs down so many first-time applicants.
An A1 licence covers light motorcycles up to 125cc with a maximum power output of 11kW. The test itself must be taken on a bike between 120cc and 125cc capable of at least 55mph. Once you hold the full A1, you can ride any motorcycle within that 11kW/125cc limit without L-plates, take a passenger, and use motorways - none of which are permitted on a provisional licence or under CBT-only status.
It's worth being clear about what the A1 doesn't cover: it doesn't permit riding anything more powerful. For that, you'd need an A2 licence at 19 or the full A category at 21 (or 24 via Direct Access). But for commuting, city use, and everyday travel across the UK, 125cc motorcycles are genuinely capable machines - modern ones typically return 80-100mpg and handle most road types comfortably.
The minimum age is 17 in England, Scotland, and Wales. You must hold a provisional licence with category A entitlement - the same provisional licence used for car driving works here. You also need a valid CBT certificate and a theory test pass certificate before you can attempt the practical tests.
If you've already passed theory tests for a lower motorcycle category since 1 July 1996, you may not need to retake the motorcycle theory test. Worth checking before you book and pay again.
The cost of getting an A1 motorcycle licence in the UK isn't a single fee - it's a sequence of them.
£34 online or £43 by post via the DVLA. This is the starting point before anything else can happen.
Typically £120-£180 depending on the provider and location. This is a one-day course, not a test - there's no pass or fail. The DL196 certificate it produces is valid for two years. If you don't complete your full licence tests within that window, you'll need to redo the CBT.
£23, the same as the car theory test. Pass mark is 43/50 on multiple choice and 44/75 on hazard perception. Both sections must be passed in the same sitting. The certificate is valid for two years.
Module 1 is the off-road element: around 20 minutes covering manoeuvres, slow-speed control, and emergency stops in a test centre environment. Module 2 follows once Module 1 is passed - a 40-minute on-road ride with an examiner assessing road skills, independent riding, and safety questions. Module 2 must be passed within two years of Module 1.
Module 1 costs £15.50 on weekdays. Module 2 costs £75 on weekdays, rising to £88.50 for evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.
Total cost for training and testing through a school typically runs £400-£600 including bike hire, instruction, and test fees combined.
Hold your A1 motorcycle licence for two years, and at age 19 you can progress to the A2 category through a single practical test - no theory test required if you used the progressive route. The A2 opens up bikes up to 35kW, which covers a much broader range of real sports and touring motorcycles.
The structured UK motorcycle licences system is designed to build experience progressively, and it works - riders who progress through A1 to A2 to A accumulate proper road time at each stage rather than jumping straight onto high-powered machines.
Whether you're applying for a provisional licence, sorting out CBT paperwork, or navigating the post-test licence application process, DVLA Services can help you get it right. Get in touch today and let's get your motorcycle driving licence on the road.
