UK Passport - How to Get or Renew Your British Passport Online

A British passport is one of the most useful documents you can hold. It opens travel to over 180 countries, serves as primary proof of identity and citizenship, and is the document most institutions reach for first when they need to verify who you are. Whether you're applying for your first adult passport, renewing one that's about to expire, replacing one that was lost or damaged, or sorting a child passport before a family trip - the process matters and the details trip people up more often than they should.

DVLA Services helps UK residents apply for and order new UK passports correctly, avoiding the rejections and delays that come from photos not meeting HM Passport Office standards, missing documents, or incorrectly completed forms.

UK Passport Prices - What You'll Pay in 2025

Fees changed on 10 April 2025. The current UK passport prices are:

Adult Passports (16 and over)

Standard 34-page passport: £94.50 online, £107 by post. The larger 54-page frequent traveller version costs an extra £13 on top. These prices apply whether you're getting your first British passport, renewing, or replacing a lost or stolen one - the fee is the same in all three cases.

Child Passports (Under 16)

£61.50 online, £74 by post for the standard version. Children's passports are valid for five years, not ten, so they come up for renewal more regularly. The process requires a countersignatory - someone who has known the parent or guardian for at least two years, holds a current British or Irish passport, and isn't a family member or housemate.

Urgent and Fast Track Services

If you need your passport quickly, there are two options. The 1-week Fast Track service costs £166.50 for adults (£178.50 for the 54-page version) and requires an appointment at a passport office. The Premium same-day service costs £222 and is available for adult renewals only - not first-time applications. You book an appointment, attend in person, and collect your passport the same day. If you're travelling within the next few weeks and haven't applied yet, these services are the only way to bridge that gap.

How Long Does a UK Passport Take

Standard online applications currently take around 3 weeks when no additional information is needed. In busy periods - primarily summer and around school holidays - that can stretch closer to 10 weeks. HM Passport Office processed 99.7% of straightforward standard applications within 3 weeks during 2024, but the remaining 0.3% that hit problems waited considerably longer. First-time applications should be budgeted at 6-10 weeks, not 3, because they require more document verification and sometimes a short video interview.

The practical rule: apply well before you need the passport. Don't book flights until it's in your hand.

What You Need for a New British Passport

For a renewal, the main requirements are your current or expired passport and a compliant passport photo. The digital photo must meet strict HM Passport Office specifications - wrong photo dimensions, incorrect background colour, or shadows on the face are the most common reasons applications get returned and delayed.

For a first-time adult passport, you'll also need your full birth certificate, proof of British nationality (or a parent's nationality documentation depending on circumstances), and a countersignatory who has known you personally for at least two years, holds a current British or Irish passport, lives in the UK, is 18 or over, and is not related to you. For applications where your last passport was issued more than 15 years ago, HM Passport Office treats this similarly to a first-time application.

If your name has changed - through marriage, civil partnership, deed poll, or divorce - include the relevant legal certificate. Original documents only; photocopies are not accepted and are one of the faster routes to rejection.

Get Your British Passport Application Right First Time

The most common reason UK passport applications are delayed is not processing backlogs - it's rejected photos and missing or incorrect documents. A returned application resets your clock entirely.

DVLA Services handles passport applications online for UK residents, making sure photos meet the required standard, documents are correct for your specific situation, and everything is submitted properly. Whether you need a standard renewal, a first British passport, or an urgent replacement - get in touch today and let's get it sorted.
